Recent Posts Widget With Post Thumbnails & Comments Count
Have you ever thought of having a list of Recent post on your blog sidebar. Blogger allows us to do this through feeds, but that is limited to a maximum of 5 items. There are numerous scripts to hack this and list any number of recent posts in your blog. A good approach is to use the Feedburner BuzzBoost, to show either the Recent posts or Recent Comments in your blog and is pretty much useful, runs without any issues too.
Recently, Bloggertricks.com released a post telling us how to add a Recent Posts widget in your blog, with thumbnails of images ( yes, pictures ) that were included in your blog post. If you don't have any pictures included in your post, the script will add a "No Image" thumbnail automatically. This is a cool widget and you can see I am actually using it in my blog, in the sidebar under the header "Recent Waves"
So here is how you do it.
Log into your Blogger account, and go to Layout >> Page Elements
(click Edit Layout in the Blogger Dashboard >> click Layout tab >> click Page Elements). Add a new HTML/JavaScript gadget into your sidebar by clicking "Add Gadget".
Now when you have the Gadget Editor popped up in front of you, copy the below given code and paste it inside it.<script language="JavaScript">
imgr = new Array();
imgr[0] = "http://i43.tinypic.com/orpg0m.jpg";
imgr[1] = "http://i43.tinypic.com/orpg0m.jpg";
imgr[2] = "http://i43.tinypic.com/orpg0m.jpg";
imgr[3] = "http://i43.tinypic.com/orpg0m.jpg";
imgr[4] = "http://i43.tinypic.com/orpg0m.jpg";
showRandomImg = true;
boxwidth = 298;
cellspacing = 8;
borderColor = "#ffffff";
bgTD = "#000000";
thumbwidth = 40;
thumbheight = 40;
fntsize = 12;
acolor = "#666";
aBold = true;
icon = " ";
text = "comments";
showPostDate = false;
summaryPost = 40;
summaryFontsize = 10;
summaryColor = "#666";
icon2 = " ";
numposts = 5;
home_page = "HTTP://WWW.TECHFLAPS.COM/;
</script>
<script src="http://myblogtalk.com/bloggertemplates/js/recentposts_thumbnail.js"
type="text/javascript"></script>
Now edit the code, ( the variable which are shown in different colors, in bold - as they control the appearence of the widget) to get a widget of your preference and to show what you want to show.
- boxwidth : This handles the width of the widget. Change this to make the widget adjustable in your sidebar.
- cellspacing : Space between cells ( Space between individual post entries )
- borderColor : This handles the border as well as BACKGROUND color of the widget. Change this to make the widget more appealing and blend it to your blog background.
- thumbwidth & thumbheight : Width and Height of the thumbnail (default are good)
- fntsize : Change this to increase / decrease font size of the title
- acolor : This will change the color of the title.
- aBold : Make this to false if you don't want bold titles.
- numposts : How many posts you want to show?
- home_page : HTTP://WWW.TECHFLAPS.COM/(Change this to your blog URL)
The script which picks the recent posts and the comments count is hosted by Bloggertricks.com. It will be better if you download the script and host it by your own, to handle accidental deletes, delay in execution and so on. A better option will be to use Google Pages ( we are currently using this).
Save the widget and now you are ready to go. Please let us know your comments and feedback's too.Happy Blogging!!!!

75 CSS, JavaScript & Flash Photo Galleries, Slideshows, Lightboxes And Scripts
Whatever images you have to present, let it be family photos, vacation snapshots or creative artistic works, you can present them in a variety of ways. Use a big screen, in slide shows or in a thumbnails gallery. However, it’s important to offer it in an attractive and intuitive way. Furthermore, the presentation itself can make images more valuable and simplify the browsing through hundreds of slides.
Of the available hundreds of solutions for web-based galleries here is a selected 75 of them with impressive slideshows, lightboxes and galleries you can use for effective presentations of your images. Let’s take a look.- SimpleViewer : SimpleViewer is a free, customizable Flash image viewing application

- FlickrViewer : allows you to view a Flickr photo set in SimpleViewer. SimpleViewer is a popular flash photo viewing tool, so FlickrViewer allows you to load photos from one of your flickr photo sets into this.

- PictoBrowser : This is probably the easiest method for displaying an image gallery on your site or blog. It takes about a minute or two to set up. Now you can display your flickr photos in style. To build your own go here to the PictoBrowser builder page.

- Zenphoto : An answer to lots of calls for an online gallery solution that just makes sense. After years of bloated software that does everything and your dishes, zenphoto just shows your photos, simply. It's got all the functionality and "features" you need, and nothing you don't.

- FrogJS Gallery : FrogJS is a simple, unobtrusive javascript gallery. It is not a replacement for other thumbnail galleries such as Lightbox JS, but rather a different way of showing galleries. This type of gallery is best used in photo stories and other places where a page-by-page gallery would normally be used.

- SlideShowPro : Flash-based slideshow application for displaying photos and videos on your web site. Available as an ActionScript 2 & 3 component for Flash and as a gallery extension for Lightroom, SlideShowPro features over 100 parameters to control color, layout, size, and behavior.

- SmoothGallery : Using mootools v1.11, this javascript gallery and slideshow system allows you to have simple and smooth (cross-fading...) image galleries, slideshows, showcases and other cool stuff on your website...

- CSS Photo Shuffler : A Javascript + CSS replacement for Flash photo fading slideshow.

- Highslide JS : is an open source image, media and gallery viewer written in JavaScript. Some of its advantages are Quick and elegant looking, No plugins like Flash or Java required, Popup blockers are no problem. The content opens within the active browser window,Single click. After opening the image or HTML popup, the user can scroll further down or leave the page without closing it.

- CSS Sliding Gallery : It is just an unordered list of images that are normally compressed vertically (reduction 8:1). When you hover over one of these compressed images it expands to full size. It is based on my sliding menu system and adapted to use images. No thumbnails are required and all the images are "pre-loaded".This method can be used either vertically, as shown, or horizontally.

- DOM Gallery : Using unobtrusive DOM scripting to create the slideshow on the fly.There are no hidden containers (span, div, ...) nor attributes to pollute the HTML markup. What appears in the "slideshow" is nothing other than the value of these 3 attributes alt, title, longdesc.

- joshuaink CSS Gallery : The technique is based on Eric Meyer's pure CSS popups and as you would except this method applied to the thumbnails works well in Firefox, Safari, Opera etc.

- TripTracker Slideshow : The viewer is free to use in personal or commercial web pages, provided that the script is not sold or exchanged for profit. An unbranded version of the slideshow, suitable also for resale, may be purchased for a one-time per-site license fee

- AJAX Slideshow : It resizes, it transitions, it fades in and out and it's not flash! The new AJAX slideshow on the homepage of my site comes to you courtesy of Scott Upton at Uptonic. This smooth, easy to use delight, is a great toolbox addition, for anyone who considers themselves part of the new breed of AJAX designers and developers.

- Cross browser CSS slide show : Hover the mouse over Set 1, Set 2 or Set 3 above to drop down the projector screen and show a 4x4 array of photographic slides in both portrait and landscape format.

- minishowcase : A small and simple php/javascript online photo gallery, powered by AJAX/JSON that lets you put easily your images in an online gallery, without having to configure databases or changing and customising code (though you may do it if you feel so) allowing to have an up-and-running gallery in a few minutes.

- Sliding List Gallery : Pure CSS Gallery

- Suckerfish HoverLightbox : Being that Suckerfish, Hoverbox, and Lighbox were all written in an organized and straightforward fashion, combining them was fairly simple. JavaScript files are controlling the Suckerfish and Lightbox separate for organizational sake, and also used a separate stylesheet to control the Suckerfish and Lightbox style. Being that all three techniques were developed to work cross browser, only minimal edits were required in the CSS to have the gallery.

- imageGal : Imagegal is a simple PHP script that will automagically create a JS/CSS/DHTML powered image gallery for you when dropped into a directory containing images.

- Suckerfish HoverLightbox Redux : The Redux has a number of improvements, mostly visual, but some behavioral changes as well. Before going into detail, it’s important to give due credit to those who helped make the Suckerfish HoverLightbox a possibility.

- iPhoto-like image resizing using Javascript : If you use the script.aculo.us slider control to capture input values, it’s really just a matter of converting those values into something useful and modifying styles.
Note: OS X folks using Firefox will likely get some stutter, due to a crippling, 3 year old bug.

- Filebrowser : The filebrowser is a lightweight PHP application that allows you to thumbnail images and view them in a web browser. That's it. Short and sweet. Like all of our software at Lussumo, the Filebrowser is 100% open-source. You can take it and alter it and use it free of charge. The GPL is your friend.

- image SlideShow : This is a script with a preview pane at top, and a sliding filmstrip at the bottom.

- Ajax Photo Gallery : The AJAX version of AgileGallery is a free AJAX photo gallery that rips through the XML output from Picasa (a free download from google) and generates DHTML for the paging and thumbnails and displays the full sized photos along with any description entered in Picasa. Since this photo gallery uses AJAX technology, it eliminates the need for any page refresh as the user pages through the photos.

- Pyxy-Gallery : Pyxy-gallery is an AJAX image gallery in PHP and JavaScript, which optionally uses lightbox.js. It is designed to be an ultra-light-weight, "drop-in" image gallery.

- GreyBox : GreyBox can be used to display websites, images and other content in a beautiful way.

- Lightbox : is a simple, unobtrusive script used to overlay images on the current page. It's a snap to setup and works on all modern browsers.

- Lytebox : Written from the Lightbox class that Lokesh Dhakar (http://www.huddletogether.com) originally wrote. The purpose was to write a self-contained object that eliminated the dependency of prototype.js, effects.js, and scriptaculous.js. Since the original version of Lytebox (which released with iFrame support), major modifications have been made to improve performance as well as "Slideshow" support, "Themes" support, HTML content support (as opposed to just images) and many more configurable options that allow you to customize the look and feel of Lytebox.

- A CSS ONLY Light Box : This is a CSS Light Box that with a little bit of 'expression' can be made to work in IE6. Not as 'flash' as the javascript version but it does work with javascript off in all browsers (except IE6).Just hover over any of the thumbnail images below to open a larger image which will be centered horizontally on the screen.Hover over the white cross to close the large image and reveal the thumbnails

- Photo scroll gallery : The thumbnail, medium size and full size images are all the same image just resized using CSS. The thumbnails are square to make the scrolling area simpler to work with. This does make these images a little distorted but not so much that they look wrong.

- Multifaceted Lightbox : A script (JavaScript) that allows you to focus the users attention on a particular portion of the screen. It creates the equivalent of a modal dialog box - this means that while the user looks at this focused part of the screen, they can't interact with the rest of the screen.

- Slightly ThickerBox : Modification of Cody Lindley's Thickbox script. I modified it for use on my Jason's Toolbox Redesign. The modifications allow the script to generate "Previous Image" and "Next Image" links. The result is that you can use Slightly ThickerBox to create image galleries. In addition, you can create groups of galleries by setting a "rel" attribute on the links.

- Slimbox 1.7 for MooTools 1.2 : Slimbox is a 4 KB visual clone of the popular Lightbox 2 script by Lokesh Dhakar, written using the compact MooTools javascript framework. It was designed to be very small, efficient, standards-friendly, fully customizable, more convenient and 100% compatible with the original Lightbox 2.

- ThickBox 3.1 : ThickBox is a webpage UI dialog widget written in JavaScript on top of the jQuery library. Its function is to show a single image, multiple images, inline content, iframed content, or content served through AJAX in a hybrid modal.

- CSS Galery 2 : Just a simple :hover over thumbnail images to give a full size view of each photograph. With all but Opera you can also click the thumbnails to retain the image on the screen. Text can be added at the bottom of each picture.

- CSS Photo Album : Well this is about as simple as it gets. The text numbers and images are held in an unordered list without any extra markup (no 'ems' or 'spans' etc). The CSS just styles the text numbers so that they appears in a box and the images so that they are hidden until your visitor clicks a number square.

- CSS Gallery 3 : This is a purely CSS based image gallery that displays larger versions of thumbnail images dynamically when the mouse hovers over them. A rich HTML caption can be added to the enlarged image, and every aspect of the Image Gallery exists as plain HTML on the page. The idea is to use CSS's ":hover" pseudo class to cause an element to react onMouseover.

- Mike’s Experiments - CSS: Photo Showcase : This experiment uses CSS and basic markup to create a simple way to display photo thumbnails on your site while offering convenient fast zoom viewing, even for dialup users. No magic needed (though magic could be added, but that’s for another day).

- xImageGallery : This script implements a Javascript image gallery and slideshow - all in one file. Unlike version 1, this script (version 2) does not reload the page, just the images - and it has an auto-slide feature. It now supports captions.

- Satellite™ : An all in one photo gallery website that takes advantage of Yahoo Flickr's image hosting and management tools. You can upload and manage your images using Flickr and host your portfolio on your own server via Satellite™. When you upload images to Flickr, your website is automatically updated! You can further take advantage of Flickr's Organizer to create Photosets and assign Keywords to your images. All of the work you do on Flickr is mirrored on your website via Satellite™.

- Dhonishow : Showing Picture Online with Javascript.

- Scrolling Photograph Gallery : Just another simple :hover over thumbnail images to give a full size view of each photograph. Works in IE6, Mozilla and Firefox (latest versions) and you can also click the thumbnails to retain the image on the screen. Text can be added at the bottom of each picture.

- CSS Gallery from Webreference : this gallery will load fairly quickly with up to twelve medium sized (approximately 400px by 250px and 15-20KB) images, as it requires all the images to be preloaded before it will work. Any more than this will cause the page loading time, to become unacceptable.

- CSS xHTML Gallery : Photo gallery with nothing but pure xHTML and CSS.

- Dynamic Image Gallery and Slideshow : This extremely lightweight JavaScript image gallery and slideshow script clocks in under 3kb packed and includes a number of cool features.

- Photo Album Script : Ideal for displaying multiple images at once, with links to cycle through additional batches of images.

- AutoViewer : AutoViewer is a free, customizable Flash image viewer. AutoViewer is designed to display a linear sequence of images and captions.

- Facebook Sliders With Mootools and CSS : Looks just a bit like Facebook, doesn't it? Anyways, play with the image using the provided sliders!

- Free Flash Photo Album

- Art Flash Gallery

- Gallery by using z-index and jQuery : Combine the CSS property ‘z-index’ and the power of jQuery to create a unique gallery which have a appearance of a pile of pictures.

- Polaroid Gallery : A free, opensource flash gallery developed by Christopher Einarsrud, in the year of 2006

- TiltViewer : TiltViewer is a free, customizable 3D Flash image viewing application.

- Flashmo 094 spiral carousel xml : Use the flash source codes at your own risk and flashmo.com is not responsible for anything including ActionScript codes.Although it is not a must, it is better to put a link back to this site "designed by flashmo.com" on your website if you can.

- 3D Curve Wall : Unique Flash based 3D curve wall similar to Flashloaded version, but this one is free.

- CSS Decorative Gallery : All you need is an extra <span> tag and apply a background image to create the overlaying effect. It is very easy and flexible — see my demos with over 20 styles, from a simple image icon to a rounded corner to a masked layer (both decorative and complex).

- Parallax Gallery : In this tutorial, you will learn how to make a Flash parallax scrolling gallery from scratch. Parallax scrolling is frequently used in most 2D animation and games, where the background images and foreground images scroll at different rate of speed. This will create an illusion of depth as the background images are moving slower than the foreground images.

- Flash Gallery : A web application that allows you to create a slideshow on your website easy and fast. You won't need any programming skills to install or use it. Just embed it into your website and script will automatically form a slideshow from a specified folder or from Flickr photostream.

- Easy Slider : Enables images or any content to slide horizontally or vertically on click. It is configurable with css alone. So, basically you link to plugin file, set the content up and style it with css.

- Auto Playing Gallery : Uses the Coda Slider pretty much “out of the box”. Sure the design was heavily altered to fit the job, but the actual functionality wasn’t altered in any way. I recently had the calling to build a “featured content area”. The Coda Slider fit the bill almost perfectly, but it needed a little functionality surgery to do what I wanted it to do.

- jQuery Gallery Scroller (jqGalScroll) : Takes list of images and creates a smooth scrolling photo gallery scrolling vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. The plugin will also create pagination to allow you to flow through your photos.

- jQuery Virtual Tour : This is an extension to the simple panorama viewer that allows you to play a little bit more with jQuery by adding interactivity to transform some panoramic views into a virtual tour!

- jQuery Multimedia Portfolio : This plugin for jQuery will automatically detect the extension of each media and apply the adapted player.

- JQZoom : A javascript image magnifier built at the top of the popular jQuery javascript framework.jQzoom is a great and a really easy to use script to magnify what you want.

- BarackSlideshow : A very tiny and lightweight slideshow script, that takes the power of MorphList to enhance visualization and navigation of the images (demo).

- Ajax Powered Gallery : The photos and titles are read from an XML file, and the thumbnails are pre-generated using Photoshop actions

- s3Slider jQuery Plugin : The s3Slider jQuery plugin is made by example of jd`s smooth slide show script.

- Javascript Slideshow : This dynamic JavaScript slideshow is feature packed and under 5KB. It is the long awaited update to my previous script here. A few new features include description support, link support, no naming restrictions, portrait image support, graceful degradation and active thumbnail status.

- Slideshow 2! : A javascript class for Mootools 1.2 to stream and animate the presentation of images on your website. This page features some examples of how Slideshow might be used to enhance the presentation of images on your website. Please view the source of this page for usage information.

- Pirolab Lightbox : Lightbox scripts have become a very popular way of displaying images online in recent months. There are a huge number of them available, using a variety of different frameworks and languages. DesignShack offers a new jQuery Lightbox script It has been designed and created by Diego Valobra.

- Slider Gallery : This ‘product slider’ is similar to a straight forward gallery, except that there is a slider to navigate the items, i.e. the bit the user controls to view the items.

- noobSlide : A lightweight "class" written with the mootools library with which you can build "slides" from simple to complex, of course, to get the maximum benefit you need to learn how to work with mootools.

- jFlow Gallery : Using the Wonderful jFlow Plugin

- Galleria : A javascript image gallery written in jQuery. It loads the images one by one from an unordered list and displays thumbnails when each image is loaded. It will create thumbnails for you if you choose so, scaled or unscaled, centered and cropped inside a fixed thumbnail box defined by CSS.

- Complex Slideshow : The addition of the four tabs allows you to add up to 72 more photos making a total of 96 possible separate images. As you can see from this demonstration you do not have to populate all the possible positions, the styling can cope with any number from 1 to 24 on each tabbed page.

- SimpleViewer : SimpleViewer is a free, customizable Flash image viewing application

How To Create Blogger Label Cloud Or Tag Cloud
I was looking around for some tag/label cloud widgets and found these interesting codes whcih makes the widget easier and each one seems to be different in its way. So I collected some and is posting here for use by my blogger friends.
A Tag Cloud is a visual depiction of tags/labels used on a website or blog. The Tags are listed alphabetically, and the frequency is shown using font size and/or colour.
PS : Make sure you backup your template before making any changes!
EXAMPLE 1: This one is from Raymond and is simple in installement. I haven't tried this but seems to be working fine.A Simple Blogger Tag Cloud Widget
EXAMPLE 2 : This one is from phydeaux3 Setup and configuration for New Blogger Tag Cloud / Label Cloud
Here is a list of site that generate tag clouds. Many of these would be useful if you wanted to add a tag cloud to your website.Each tool has its own way of getting data for the cloud, from RSS feeds, to plain text input, as well as different options to format and display the cloud.Added on May 18th, 2009

del.icio.us - del.ico.us is a popular social bookmarking service. It can make a tag cloud from the tags provided with all of the links in a user profile, which can be embedded.
TagCrowd - This site generates a static tag cloud based on word frequency from a web page, uploaded file, or plain text input.
TagMyCloud - this cloud generator allows a user to paste in some text, and it shows a cloud that updates every few seconds. The contents of the cloud were mostly in German, and had nothing to do with the text I pasted in.
Tag Cloud Generator - this site has a fairly slick dynamic interface. It allows a user to enter either a webpage url, from which it automatically extracts tags, or just to enter the tags directly. Then it provides some formatting options, and outputs code to embed the cloud.
Tag Cloud Builder Demo - this tag cloud generator accepts either text input or a webpage, and generates a text (not link) tag cloud based on word frequency.
Tag Cloud Generator - I tried this one, but it said my page could not be converted or did not exist.
ZoomClouds - this site offers a solution for users wishing to add a tag cloud to their website. To make a cloud, sign up, give it a feed, configure the cloud's style, and add the code to your site.
Text Tag Cloud Generator - input some text into a field and specify the some properties for style, then click generate. It shows the cloud and provides code to embed it.
Keyword Cloud Generator - generates a tag cloud that can be embedded, given a page url.
Clusty - Clusty generats a tag cloud based on a short query, rather than a full web page or a body of text. For example, given 'quantum mechanics', it generates a cloud with words such as 'energy' and 'physics'.
TagCloud.com - a formerly popular tag cloud generator that is no longer running.

Solution for System32 Folder Opening At Windows Statrup Issue
I recently downloaded the Release candidate for Windows 7 and installed it in my new VAIO and from that day onwards, whenever I login to my laptop I was greeted with the System32 folder. I checked the startup folder, checkted the msconfig.ini and all possible places where it could have been misconfigured. Also checked was the Windows Registry where the start up items are configured. This was quite a bit disturbing, when you are greeted with the most important folder in a Windows System on login.
Normally when you try to open up Windows or Windows/System32 folder, in Vista and Windows 7, the UAC asks for confirmation or some sort of authorization. this is absurd as I was not able to get this bug out of my system after 4 long days of search.
I tried the solution given at the Microsoft Support site which says"When you log on to Microsoft Windows, a Microsoft Windows Explorer window may open that displays the contents of the System32 folder.This behavior also occurs if there is a String value that contains only a single quote character ("") as the Value data in the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
They say the cause for this might be a null, incomplete, or damaged entry exists in the registry. The solution was also given on that page, but that was not working for me. As per the Microsoft Support site, the solution was to edit the Registry keysHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
andHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
verify that all the values in these keys do not contain any incorrect, incomplete, or null entries (such as "").
I checked all the entries inside these keys and was not able to find an incomplete entry. Then it says below that, in More Information section, an entry for ActMovie.exe /Check had been confirmed as the cause for this issue. But nothing, nothing was working for me.One solution for this, as I found in an online forum is to delete the dektop.ini file from the windows startup folder, which also, unfortunately was not working for me. So id ecided to do some trial and error methods by myself and at the end I was SUCCESSFUL in getting rid of that disturbing bug of system32 folder opening at System startup.
Here are the steps that saved me. Please remember to take a backup of your registry before doing this.- Go to Windows Start and open Registry Editor.
- Go to the Registry Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
- There might be several entries inside this key. Double click on the first entry, copy the value.
- Click on the Start button, paste the copied value in the Rearch / Run box at the bottom and hit enter.
- If System32 folder is not opening, go ahead and repeat steps 3 and 4 for each registry value.
- If System32 folder is opened for any Registry key in Step 4, go ahead and remove that registry key.
- Repeat steps 3 to 6 for the Registry Key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
also. - Restart the System
While doing this, for one entry, when I hit pasted the value and hit enter, the System32 folder came up. BINGO!!! He was the culprit. I removed the registry entry and now there is no System32 folder opening up at startup. Hope this would be useful to you guys.

JavaScript & CSS | Culprits of Poor Website performance
Is your website loading too slow? Are you loosing traffic to your site? Loosing some sales? Before reducing the number of requests to your servers, reducing JPEG sizes or enlisting your services to a content delivery network vendor, stop for a minute and check those JavaScript’s and CSS files you are using in your site.

According to a recent recommendation from Steve Souders, Google guru who specializes in web site performance analysis and optimization, steps like those, which are aimed at optimizing the web server, makes only a tiny impact. So who is the culprit? Who is the main suspect, who is reducing the performance of your websites.
The vast majority of the delay or performance issues are result of code executing inside the we b browser, Souders said on a talk on Tuesday at Microsoft Corp.’s TechEd conference at Los Angeles. Only 10% to 20% of the time it tooks a web site to load completely could be attributed to the web server.
In today’s AJAX heavy websites, the offending code is usually JavaScript. This is not because the files are very large, but because of the way web browsers treat Javasript."The first generation of Web browsers decided that because they had to execute all of the JavaScript files in order, we might as well execute one while stopping all other downloads -- and preventing any other code from being executed or rendered"
, he said.
That might have made sense a decade ago, but in today's era of PCs powered by dual- and quad-core CPUs, it doesn't. And the cost of the delays created can be high.
Google has found that a 500-millisecond delay results in a 20% decrease in Web traffic, while Amazon.com Inc. has seen a 100-millisecond delay cutting its sales by 1%, Souders said.
Better browsers, Better performance : New and upcoming Web browsers will be able to download JavaScript files while executing them. Internet Explorer 8, released last month, has that capability, Souders said, as do the upcoming Firefox 3.5 from Mozilla Corp. and Chrome 2.0 from Google.
Barring an overhaul of the JavaScript, the boost will stay small, Souders said.
To fix the problem, Souders first recommends a free tool he created called Yslow, which analyzes and then grades how well a Web page is designed for maximum speed. Originally developed for IE, Yslow 2.0 is an add-on for Firefox integrated with the Firebug Web development tool. It can be downloaded on the Yahoo Developer Network.
With Yslow, users can see how much JavaScript is being loaded in the beginning and determine whether it's creating a bottleneck. They can then split the JavaScript files, loading only the necessary JavaScript at the start and leaving the rest until the end, after the words and images are up, he said.
Doing that helped one Google site that Souders declined to name speed up its initial page rendering by 60%.
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) can also drag down site performance. CSS files, which describe a Web page's look and feel, have become more elaborate in recent years. CSS files are a problem in part because users tend to stay on certain CSS-heavy sites, such as Web mail portals, all day. These sites will re-render constantly throughout the day, producing a delay attributable to overelaborate CSS files each time, Souders said.

88 Professional Fonts For Your Web Sites And Designs
Everyone wants good looking fonts on their blogs or designs and the importance of typography is design is unavoidable. With the adoption of CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) in the domain of website design, a new era has started where the art of topography underwent complete transformation. The suitability of various web design fonts makes it easier for the readers and visitors to go through your articles. The correct font with better accuracy, precision and balance can give your letter the elegance and sharpness they deserve.
Font is the key element in the dynamic process of web designing and plays vital role in spreading the true meaning to the words spelled in the web site.A recent psychology study on furniture instructions has shown that font selection is important: the more readible and legible a font is, the more influence it has on a consumer's perception of how easy or difficult the navigation is.
Here's an overview of over excellent free fonts that you might want to use in your designs. Some fonts, like Arial, Georgia, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Calibri, Cambria, Candara, Constantia and Corbel are delivered almost “automatically”.- Share : The special font-family, Share, has been developed to advance the TYPO3 identity further and to maintain consistency across communication channels. Having a corporate font means making every print or screen design a completely recognizable product.
- Quicksand Font by Andrew Paglinawan

- Diavlo

- Byington : Inspired by the ancient carvings chiselled into Trajan’s column in Rome, Byington pays homage to Trajan’s venerable lines but strips away the subtle nuances usually associated with the classic design.

- Cardo : Cardo is a large Unicode font specifically designed for the needs of classicists, Biblical scholars, medievalists, and linguists.

- Bitstream Vera
- Justus by Khunrath

- Inconsolata : It is a monospace font, designed for code listings and the like, in print.

- Fontin : The Fontin is designed to be used at small sizes. The color is darkish, the spacing loose and the x-height tall. The numbers of the Fontin have a ‘hybrid’ design. They carry the characteristics of medieval numbers, but their size is larger than the x-height. Mac (Type 1), PC (TTF, Opentype).

- Fontin Sans : Available weights: regular, italic, bold, bold italic and small caps. It is a sans companion of Fontin and can be downloaded at Mac & PC (OpenType). Fontin Sans is absolutely free for personal and commercial use.

- FF Reminga : The all-new OpenTypeFF Reminga is an improved version of an underused FontFont classic. Try the bold italic for free.

- Union

- Yanone Kaffeesatz : This “coffee”-font is supposed to be used in headlines and brief text passages; it shouldn’t, however, be used for body copy. The numbers and currency signs are monospaced, which means that they have the same width. This is useful if you’d like to place them on a restaurant menu beneath each other in a table.

- Amplitude : A successful agate predicts the spread of ink on paper and effectively keeps legibility under less than ideal conditions. Fascinated by the visual aspects of these entirely functional compensations, Christian Schwartz designed Amplitude, an extensive sanserif series for text and display that turns function into style: deep angled cuts keep small sizes readable, while adding character at display sizes.

- Warnock Pro: Warnock Pro Bold font. Fonts.com has the best selection of downloadable, design quality, True Type and PostScript fonts for Mac and Windows.

- Vegur

- Alte Haas Grostek by Yann Le Coroller

- Univers Std : This OpenType font may include small caps, extra glyphs, andotherfeatures.

- Trajan Font Family : In designing Trajan, Carol Twombly was influenced by the style of the chiseled writings of the Romans during the first century AD. Most importantly, her interpretation of an ancient style resulted in a font whose clarity and beauty come across in modern printed materials.

- TheMix : Designed by Luc(as) de Groot

- Tallys : Tallys is a font that is one degree slanted and has large caps, a small x-height and long ascenders. Only roman style is available.

- Syntax Std

- Stella

- Steiner : Gabriele Magurno, the creator of Steiner, recommends the font for logo or decorative use. Steiner lacks a full array of symbols and letters, so the font should not be used in blocks of paragraph text. Steiner ranks as one of the most popular fonts on dafont.com, a free font hosting website.

- Stalemate : This OpenType font may include small caps, extra glyphs, andotherfeatures.

- Spirequal Light (Free Font)

Baar Sophia Font Free
- Seravek : Seravek is a linear sans serif designed for identity, editorial and information design. Five weights spanning Bold to Extra Light with italics and small caps allow for a range of applications both typographic and utilitarian in nature.

- Ronnia : One of the most remarkable characteristic of this humanistic sans serif is its versatility. Ronnia’s personality performs admirably in headlines, but is diffident enough for continuous text and small text alike.

- Romeral : Romeral is designed to produce a noticeable visual impact that invites the audience to the reading due to its sizable thickness. Interestingly enough, the basic idea was to find a way to fill the color titles zone in order to create a comfortable atmosphere for the reading experience.

- Rockwell : Rockwell font appeared with Monotype Design Studio in 1934, a time which saw the return to popularity of slab serif fonts. Rockwell's strong and harmonious characters make this font particularly flexible

- Precious Serif : Designed to accompany and complement theSans family, each weight shares the same proportions of x-height, stem thickness and ascender/descender height as its corresponding Sans.

- Precious Sans : In Cooke’s ongoing quest for simplicity and elegance he developed this striking alternative sans family. Starting with a hairline Thin and finishing with Ultra Black, Precious Sans has a comprehensive range of weights, fairly large x-height and open counters for maximum clarity when set in small point sizes.

- Portland LDO

- PMN Caecilia : PMN Caecilia™ is the premiere work of the Dutch designer Peter Matthias Noordzij. He made the first sketches for this slab serif design in 1983 during his third year of study in The Hague, and the full font family was released by Linotype in 1990. The PMN prefix represents the designer's initials, and Caecilia is his wife's name. This font has subtle variations of stroke thickness, a tall x-height, open counters, and vivacious true italics. Noordzij combined classical ductus with his own contemporary expression to create a friendly and versatile slab serif family. With numerous weights from light to heavy, and styles including small caps, Old style figures, and Central European characters, PMN Caecilia has all the elements necessary for rich typographic expression.

- Pigiarniq Inuktitut font : Have you ever known about the existence of Nunavut? A small region in Canada with one of the lowest population rate of the world? Probably not.
