• Thursday, April 25, 2002 FOLLOW THE WAVES What Is RSS? : You’ve probably seen this icon: …on the internet before, but maybe knew what it was for. This icon tells visitors that there is a RSS Feed available for the site. RSS feeds are read using either your browser or a feedreader (Google reader is my favourite) and allow you to read the latest posts or stories on a site. The beauty of a RSS feed is not only can read all the latest posts from a site all on one page without having to visit dozens of pages, you can add as many RSS feeds as you like to your summaries.

This can save you valuable time and allow you to read the posts from your favourite sites quicker. For instance, imagine reading 5 posts a day on 10 sites. You would have to visit 50 pages in total, and wait for all the ads etc to load. With a RSS reader you would just have to visit one page each day, and if you don’t like a story, you just move onto the next one rather than wasting time loading a story you don’t want to read! You also don’t have to waste time visiting a site to find that there are no new posts.

Now you can subscribe to TechFlaps.com's updates and new posts, interesting news and stuff through two ways, depending on your preference.

What is RSS? : Most of the people who are new to Internet or to the Information Technology Arena don't know what is RSS and what it can do or for how to use that.

If you want to all the new posts in TechFlaps.com, get yourself updated about news in IT, the best option is to subscribe to our RSS.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a technology used by several millions of internet users to keep track of what is happening live on their favourite websites. Probably you are thinking what’s the need of subscribing to RSS when you can track websites’ updates by using Bookmarks feature in your browser, aren’t you?

    The Problem With Bookmarking
    • You miss information when you forget to check your bookmarks.
    • If the site is not updated you see the information again and again on the sites that don’t update very often.
    • You don’t know when a site has been updated.

Here’s Where RSS Comes In Action. RSS enables you to tell websites to send the information to your browser whenever it gets updated. So if you are subscribed to a site’s RSS, let’s say ITechDude’s, then whenever an article is written on this site it will automatically be sent to your browser. This way you’ll get to know when and what articles have been added on the site.

How To Use RSS? : RSS feeds can be read by using a feed reader. You can find many feed readers on the web like Google Reader and Bloglines. Some other feed readers are MyGoogle, MyMSN and MyYahoo. Every new article of the subscribed site comes to your feed reader. So whenever you login to your feed reader you will get to know what is happening on your favorite site. However, many web-browsers also have inbuilt feed reader. An example is Firefox. So next time whenever you see any of the feed icons (called chicklets) like the ones shown here on your favorite site, subscribe to it using your feed reader.

Now that you know what RSS is you can subscribe to TechFlaps’s RSS so that you get informed by your browser whenever there is an update on this site. Another option to subscribe to this site is by Email. So if you subscribe by Email the updates are sent to your inbox. In this option you don’t need any feed reader but a valid email-id that you open very often.
